How I introduced Cheerwine to a Canadian

18 Mar

The first time I ever heard of Cheerwine was in September 2005. I had just moved to Durham, NC, and a co-worker took me to The Q Shack for lunch. And there it was, Cheerwine mingling with the other fountain sodas. It was so foreign to me, but when I finally tried it I fell in love.

Cheerwine is a sugary, cherry-flavored soda that comes from Salisbury, NC, and in my experience is stocked only in the South.

About a week ago, I went to Cook Out (a North Carolin a-based burger joint) and saw they had Cheerwine floats on the menu. So, while waiting in line, I posted a tweet on Twitter about it (see below).

One of my followers on Twitter (Mike of absent.canadian fame) saw the message and asked me more about it. And before I knew it, he posted his first ever video blog displaying his first ever sip of Cheerwine goodness. The best part is that Mike is Canadian and has this thick accent (I love when he says “about”). And he blogs about what it’s like to be a Canadian living in the American South. So, if you want to see a Canadian take his first taste of Cheerwine, click here.

Have you ever tried Cheerwine? What’s your review?

I have never tried it because I’m not sure if there is caffeine in it or not. I don’t drink things with caffeine.

Tom talks about when he went to UNC he had to come with a advertisement campaign about Cheerwine. That’s the only reason I know what it is. Mmm Cook Out.

No caffeine for Brandy? No way. Seriously? That’s pretty impressive. I drink coffee constantly (even as I type this I have a mug next to me). Glad you like Cook Out though!

;) I quit caffeine when I was 16. I don’t even eat chocolate, though it’s tempting (I found I actually break out every time I eat the stuff!). But yeah did it at first to see if I could then it just became natural not to have it. That’s why you mainly see me drinking water.

Cook Out is great! We get tour bands to go there, some even loved it so much they bought a t-shirt! LOL It’s so funny. We’re like hey, it’s cheap and it’s a lot of food, you should go! A lot of bands swear by it when they come this way.

Hah cheerwine! I’m from the South and had a similar experience when I went to Chapel Hill for undergrad. It’s largely unavailable along the Gulf Coast, but we did have Big Shot for a while. Any interest in starting a west coast distributorship? I know a ton of people out here desperate for soft drinks made from sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup (which is why all California people love Mexican Coca Cola).
