Fashion Blogging: Ruffled skirt spruces up outfit
Meet Masa Tanaka. I spotted her last week sitting with some friends at Cafe Helios in Raleigh’s Glenwood South district (which has become the unofficial local Tweeple hangout) sporting this well-layered outfit.
The N.C. State University student graduated last weekend and scored a sweet gift to her mom: A medium-length grey skirt trimmed with several layers of white ruffles. You’re probably thinking: Wait, that adorable chick is sporting a royal blue dress, not a skirt … Well, you’re half right.
Masa understands the fine art of layering. Under that cotton slip dress she scored from Urban Outfitters is the skirt her mom bought her. By wearing the skirt under the dress, she’s managed to add texture to an otherwise simple dress. And she didn’t stop there. She also paired the dress with skinny jeans and a long-sleeved, white cotton shirt, which helps add emphasis to the snowy layers in her skirt.
The red flats were the perfect finishing touch, providing a splash of color. “I just like colorful stuff,” Masa said, when I asked her why she went for the red shoes. “I try to be as colorful as possible.”
A final fun detail: Masa’s mom lives in Japan and came to Raleigh for her graduation last weekend. She brought the skirt from Japan, telling her daughter the ruffled skirts are all the rage over there. Masa just so happened to be wearing the skirt for the first time the day I spotted her.
I like the layered look and her shoes are fabulous. But I don’t like this look with jeans. I guess it’s becoming popular, but I still say wear a dress or jeans, but not both.

I’m super big on the pants with a skirt or dress look. I’ve been doing it for a couple years now. Don’t really know if it’s in style or not, but I’ve adopted it as my own personal style. It’s great in the fall or spring. Come summer time though, I say just wear a skirt or dress (no pants beneath).

I can add that here in the Netherlands, the spring thing seems to be skirts with leggings. Not as many skinny jeans – those the girls here wear alone… and they wear them tight, tight, tight!!
I also see tons of flats, just like these… the cobblestone streets in Europe beg for flats, even though some of us shorter Americna girls still wobble around on heels sometimes
Also, my former Italian roommate likes to sometimes rock shorter skirts with cute nylon socks that go up above the knee, and then boots below the knee. She said it’s pretty trendy to do that in Italy.
During the winter all the European women seem to rock their skirts with heavier tights and boots. It’s an awesome way to maximize your wardrobe…
I’m also big on the leggings with short skirts look. I can only imagine the fashions you’ve pulled off since you’ve moved to the Netherlands. I’m sure you’re looking stylish, as always. If you were around, I could just photograph you every day and make you my fashion blog.
Coming from a male point of view I don’t really like it. The jeans are to much and I think the shoes are the wrong color.
Yeah, well you never did like the way I dressed and this is so an outfit I would wear.
Umm… That is not cool at all. Dress and shirt are too big. Looks sloppy. Disagree.
