Loving this cat could lead to a vampire clown attack

27 Jun

As seen in the window of a bookshop on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

I forgot to write down the name of the store, so if you know where this is, please post it in the comments below. I think all businesses should be required to have a cat. How awesome would that be (unless you’re allergic or hate them, of course)?!

I think all businesses should also be required to employ vampire clowns. Just think how many jobs could be added in this area. A real boon to the economy! Also, the Cat Union should consider teaming up for advertising with the Vampire Clown Union. I really think the two groups have something in common.

When I was in New Orleans about 7 years ago, I think every used bookstore I visited had at least one cat. At first I thought it was nice, and I still do, but later I started wondering if the cats were there to be ratters.

I think that is “The Bookshop” but I am not totally sure. Either way, I need to find it so I can go grab that Amy Sedaris book. http://www.bookshopinc.com

@Lisa You just gave me my official smile of the day!

@Joseph Hmm, that’s a good point. If you rounded the corner in a New Orleans books store without a cat, you’d probably come across some big rats.

@Jeremy, I need to pop in the bookshop and interview the owner about their cats. I wonder how they keep them from wandering out.

    Ginny,

This is The Bookshop in the 400 block of West Franklin Street. They keep the cats from wandering out (we hope) by advising the customers not to let them out, as they also advise on other matters involving these important beings.(Self-important, anyway). This is one of my favorite Chapel Hill businesses, and this approach to customers, cats, and clowns is one of the reasons.

When my brother was a golf pro (club, not touring) about a zillion years ago, he kept a calico cat in the pro shop, which helped to make it more homey, and he found that people just hung out more and bought more stuff — so the kitty was good for business (he didn’t give the cat a cut, but he took Cal with him when he left the golf biz and kept her for 17 years, so it was probably a fair trade after all). A golden retriever lives in the used and rare bookshop in downtown Springfield (IL), and is a favorite of the patrons to be sure.

I think having a cat is a prerequisite for owning a used bookstore. I went to a couple in Portland, OR years ago and they had cats. I am a cat person, so I was thrilled. I wish I had a job where I could have my cat with me all day. Although, it takes a certain kind of cat to not be freaked out by all the strangers walking around.
