The state’s trash becomes your treasure at the N.C. State Surplus Property store
When you walk into the North Carolina Surplus Property store, you’ll immediately see several rows of used office chairs. Many are stained, tattered or sagging. But at $3 bucks, it might be worth looking past the coffee stains of state employee past.
I went to the store Monday to see what it was all about. I left feeling like I walked through an institutional time warp. The state’s surplus store is filled with worn wonders. A $5 turn-dial TV. A large $25 light table. A $400 restaurant ice maker.
Each item is marked with a sticker noting which state department it used to reside in, a small notation offering a peek into its past. Most of the state’s surplus stuff must have seen its heyday in the 70s, 80s, and 90s or so it seems. Still, there are some cheap finds on office furniture and other miscellaneous odds and ends (raised toilet seats, staplers, floppy disks and more).
And if you go at the right time, you can even wander around the Drug Seizure Property Showroom. The room features everything from flat screen TVs and couches to a surf board and table saw. Items in the showroom are only available for sale via a bid process.
The store is located on Chapel Hill Road in Raleigh, not far from its intersection with I-40. Just look for a large fenced-in lot filled with state vehicles. You can buy those too. Hours are here. Directions are here.
Have you ever bought anything from the state surplus store? I didn’t this time, but I’ll be back.
That’s amazing. I had no idea Raleigh had a place like this. As a poor college student in need of a cheap office chair I think I’m gonna find my way over there.
Jason,
Its ‘the state’ and its a Southeast state surplus store, that means that generally 48 other states would have thrown the chair out or sent it to goodwill 15 years prior.
Wow, that’s right by our office! Think I might have to swing by there… I could use a new surfboard.
I will have to check that out…thanks for letting us know it’s out there!
When you go, you have to check-in at the window inside the shop and show your ID. But it’s free to browse around.
So good to know… thanks for looking out for us cheapies Ginny!
Also NC State University hosts a surplus sale every Friday starting at 8am. It’s located off of Blue Ridge, if you go north past the theater you’ll see a sign to turn into an industrial park. Follow the signs and you’ll find it.
In the past I’ve purchased a number of CRT monitors, a filing cabinet (which I’m still using), an aerobics step, computer cables, a desk, and probably more. A friend I went with purchased about 2000′ of CAT 6 cable for under $10.
@Zach Thanks for the tip on the NC State surplus sale. Too bad it’s on Fridays though, makes it hard to get to for those of us with day jobs.
GOOD TO KNOW. I HAD BEEN TOLD EARLIER THIS WEEK THERE WAS A PLACE IN RALEIGH WHERE THE PUBLIC COULD BUY SURPLUS. I WAS AT THE NCDMV & COMMENTED ABOUT THE ALL WOOD CHAIRS IN THE WAITING ROOM. A LADY THERE SAID THERE WAS A PLACE IN RALEIGH WHERE THEY COULD BE PURCHASED FOR $15 OR SO, BUT SHE HAD TO LEAVE & I DIDN’T GET TO TALK TO HER ANYMORE. TONIGHT I SEE SOMEONE IS SELLING (WHAT APPEARS TO BE THESE CHAIRS) FOR $50. I GUESS HE WON THE BID ON A LOT. I’M ONLY INTERESTED FOR MY OWN PERSONAL USE. THANKS FOR THE INFO.
I love your blog kissy kissy !
