It’s not too late to go camping at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival

8 Oct

shakoriI’m sitting on my couch watching Pam and Jim get ready to tie the not on The Office and wishing I was at the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival. The four-day festival in Chatham County started this evening, but I can’t make it out there until tomorrow.

The festival features dozens of acts from Donna the Buffalo to Chatham County Line, but more than that, it’s a chance to decompress. Picture this, you get to wander a large farmstead, stop by four stages where at any given time there’s music, clogging, poetry slams, games and more.

I’ll be leaving tomorrow to snag a decent camp site. The sooner you get there, the better the chance you have to find a spot because the campground fills up quickly. Here are my tips for if you go and plan to camp:

* Bug Spray. Bring it. Spray it. Don’t forget it.

* Bring closed toe shoes. The primitive road and paths that wrap around the camping area are filled with roots, rocks, sticks and more. There’s nothing worse than stubbing your toe in the dark or brushing up against a branch and not being sure if it’s a snake.

* Bring your own beer. I don’t remember being able to buy beer at the festival grounds, but as long as you keep your beer in a cup or koozie. It’s allowed.

* Bring a flashlight. It gets very dark at night. Whether you’re camping or not, you’ll probably be glad you brought one.

* Take a blanket or your own chairs because there is no seating in front of the stages.

* Research the bands before you go so you don’t miss out on a good show. They guide they give you at the gate has bios of the bands. Read it. I did this in the spring and managed to find out there was a Patsy Cline cover band playing at a smaller stage.

If you’ve been before and  you have tips, please leave them in the comment section.

Hey hey! That was a pretty good episode. I liked when they went and got married on the boat. Her dress was really pretty too!
